Belongings stay in the house where you can see themClears rooms for demolition, cleaning and rebuilding
Less handling, so less risk of breakage or lossItems can be cleaned with specialized equipment off site

Before anything leaves the house

  • Get a room-by-room inventory with photos of each box's contents
  • Ask how items will be labeled and how you can find something specific
  • Ask where storage is located and how it is secured
  • Make sure non-salvageable items are listed and photographed before disposal
  • Ask your insurer to approve the pack-out and storage costs
  • Keep a copy of the inventory for your own records

Getting things back

When cleaning and rebuilding are done, contents come back in an organized delivery. Check each box against the inventory, open a sample of boxes on the spot, and note anything missing, damaged or still smelling of smoke on the delivery paperwork before you sign it.

Some items, especially upholstery and books, may need a second round of deodorizing. Report lingering odor right away rather than waiting until everything is unpacked.

Common questions

Can I keep some belongings with me during a pack-out?
Yes. Set aside what the household needs for daily life, such as clothing, school and work items, medications and important papers, and tell the crew before packing starts so those items are not boxed.
Who pays for storage?
Many policies cover reasonable pack-out and storage as part of the claim. Confirm with your insurer in writing before items leave the house.
